Cornelis De Jong, a 42-year-old forensic expert with a cold, suspicious temperament, receives a final challenge from a dying friend: solve the mystery hidden in a navigational chart. The map does not just mark waters; it records a murder that has haunted them for years. As Cornelis digs into the past, old debts surface and rivals close in. He is aided by Hester Vis, an investigative journalist obsessed with reclaiming her family’s honor, despite their bitter past. Together, they navigate a web of secrets guarded by Judith Smit, a ritualistic society leader, and William Van der Berg, a museum curator with his own hidden files. Anna Bark, a meticulous archive restorer, helps decode the faded ink. The truth is buried deep, but the past is ready to claw its way back, demanding that Cornelis choose between loyalty to the dead and survival against the living.
